The Institute of Earth System Science (IESW) plays a key role in teaching Geosciences and Geography, together with the Institute of Economic and Cultural Geography. It offers three Bachelor’s and three Master’s programmes, including teacher training in Geography for grammar schools. In addition, the IESW contributes to several degree programmes in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape Sciences, and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science.
A strong emphasis is placed on practice-oriented teaching and working with empirical data that are analysed using quantitative methods. The courses combine lectures, lab classes, field trips and project-based formats to create a diverse study experience. In this way, students develop a solid understanding of the subject matter and sound practical skills for careers in research and professional practice.
